or, maybe i've simply wandered into a hurricane

i'd call it a tornado
a swirling vortex pulling me

pull the curtain
set the stage
get back in your places
you are out of character
the doors all blew open
the lines have been forgotten
but, the show must go on!

sing your song and do your dance
cry your tears for the performance of a lifetime
jump in your character
speak another's words
absorb their energy
become their essence
feel their pain
dance in the midst of a hurricane
or is it a tornado?

keep your head above the water
it's pulling

trying to pull you under
live the part
become a fish
join the water swallowing you
grow some gills and fins
you'll fit right in

a different stage
in a different world
but you know the words
they never change
the shadows are alive
bats are darting
candles flickering
a deep, dark place
a haven for lost souls
the air is oppressive
the dampness seeps
the chains, so heavy
an animal in the zoo
looking through the bars
the smell of fear wafts from me
i hear a million screams
bouncing off the cave walls
my mouth open in a silent plea
why does no one hear me?
the shadows whisper
"We hear you."
look before you leap
do you really think you know
the answer to the riddle?
you'd better think again, my friend
the depths are dangerous
the currents furious
the tide, it overflows the beach
a dark wave flowing
invisible from the surface
building from the deep
the heavens are crying
the earth in turmoil
a fire breathing dragon
descends upon the crowds
to mayhem and madness
people running
people scattering
seeking their escape
blindly running right into
the very mouth of the beast
who seeks to blacken them
then devour their souls.
